here, my musings on the 2021 DO Ratina authored WebMD article on naturopathy:
001. we're told at WebMD in "What Is Naturopathic Medicine?" (2021 archived):
"naturopathic medicine is a system that uses natural remedies to help the body heal itself [...]";
and that's it. Nothing else. But we can do better, because is this a gross omission that is inexcusable. It is so incomplete it is misleading and malignant. Because, quite easily, one can if one wishes to be transparent on the matter simply say that naturopathy is based upon the science-ejected idea known as vitalism. Here it is in terms of THEIR global consensus. Strike One, WebMD. Naturalistic language, coding a sectarian / secret premise! Doesn't sound like mainstream medicine to me, or enough transparency to provide informed consent.
"they might use complementary medicine -- like homeopathy, herbal medicine, and acupuncture [...]";
those three therapies, for me when presented this way, show they are held as 'plausibly and effectively' equal. Yet, we know homeopathy is the greatest of pseudopharmacies. And the other two are therefore good company, similar birds of that feather. Yet WebMD has no opinion. Strike Two in terms of omission.
"naturopathic physicians: these are also called naturopathic doctors (ND) or doctors of naturopathic medicine (NMD). They usually attend an accredited four-year, graduate-level school. There they study basic sciences similar to those studied in conventional medical school. They also study nutrition, psychology, and complementary therapies such as herbal medicine and homeopathy. Some states and territories require naturopathic doctors to become licensed. That means they have to pass an exam to practice and take continuing education classes [...]";
so much for higher education! There are undergraduate courses that teach how to discriminate, through science and critical thinking, what's justifiable from what's bogus pseudoscience. And here [as in, like, here] we have doctoral level nonsense. And of course that exam falsely categorizes homeopathy as clinical science. Strike Three.
